Abstract
This qualitative study examined how the learning environment and diverse
language learning strategies affect a small group of adult women learners in their ability
to learn to speak French as a Second Language. The learning environment consisted of a
process of reflection through journal writing and dialogue in study circles. The learning
strategies involved, but were not limited to, flashcards, mnemonics, total physical
response, and word association. The study took into consideration the learnersâ past
experiences with French language learning, participantsâ social and recreational goals and
the learnersâ awareness of various learning styles.
