dc.descriptionThis panel session at the 2012 Co-operating to Build a Better Nova Scotia Conference in Halifax explored housing co-operatives in the province of Nova Scotia. Karen Brodeur from the Co-op Housing Federation of Canada discussed opportunities and challenges of non-profit housing co-ops with the looming end of operating agreements. Darlene Doucet, Executive Director of the Le Conseil Coopératif Acadien de la Nouvelle-Écosse, introduced an equity model of co-op housing for seniors located in Chéticamp, and discussed how the housing was financed (including the use of CEDIFS - Community Economic Development Investment Funds), the layout of the building, and how the organization is governed. Catherine Leviten-Reid and Alicia Lake, both of Cape Breton University, explored the co-operative difference in the housing sector through a comparison of co-op and non-profit housing for seniors.
